The aromatic treasure created by Johann Maria Farina

Fresh, light, and delicate: this is the essence of Johann Maria Farina’s Eau de Cologne. An invention that was truly revolutionary at the time, and today, three centuries later, is still hugely successful. We’re going to take a look at that treasure hidden inside the bottle with the red tulip trademark, a treasure that promises to seduce!

How was Farina’s Eau de Cologne created?

It was in the year 1709 in the German city of Cologne that a fragrance destined for worldwide fame was born. The man who invented it was Johann Maria Farina. Originally from Italy, this businessman had founded a perfume factory where a spectacular creation came into being.

Satisfied with what was to become Farina Eau de Cologne, he immediately came up with an evocative description that everyone fell in love with, conjuring up images of an Italian spring morning, and the gleaming leaves of the orange trees after the rain. He also made reference to bergamot and mountain daffodils, grapefruit, cedar, wild herbs, and flowers. How could people not fall madly in love with such a heady combination?

And the elite of the day did exactly that, as did so many great, historical figures. From Napoleon Bonaparte to Goethe, Coco Chanel, Marlene Dietrich, and even a president of the United States himself, Bill Clinton.

Farina’s delicate touch

Farina turned out to have an unmatched nose for cologne. Lemon and bergamot make up the top notes, but the heart is a mix of jasmine, hyacinth and lily of the valley. Musk, sandalwood, and cedar are the seductive base notes.

Ideal for both men and women, this is a fragrance that stands out for its versatility. It’s the perfect companion for all aspects of daily life.

The Farina 1709 brand today

The Farina 1709 brand is still a symbol of elegance and distinction, and it remains in the hands of the eighth generation of the Farina family. Still just as fashionable as it was 300 years ago, or possibly even more so, it’s now the favorite cologne of many people all over the world.

This is clear when you visit the building that housed the very first factory, which today serves as a museum dedicated to this brand of perfumes, the oldest in the world. Located at Obenmarspforten 21 in Cologne, it’s easily recognized thanks to the awnings that are the same shade of red as the tulip on the original bottle and also on the packaging of today.

Here some fascinating facts are revealed. For example, the original bottle was a small elongated one topped by a red tulip that the gentlemen of the time kept inside their leather boots. And the Farina Eau de Cologne was believed to possess healing properties.

At the Perfumería Benegas we have the honor of being able to offer the aromatic fragrance created by Johann Maria Farina together with other creations from the same brand. Such as Cuir de Russie, an elegant evocation of the Golden Twenties, which has a strong personality all of its own. Let yourself be carried away by these fragrances; it’s a real pleasure to be able to enjoy them as much today as when they were launched for the very first time so long ago.
